Minnesota suicide prevention plans and initiatives
Minnesota's suicide prevention efforts are led by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) through the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Unit within the Injury and Violence Prevention and Mental Health Division. In partnership with the Minnesota Suicide Prevention Taskforce, MDH develops Minnesota's State Suicide Prevention Plan and leads its implementation and evaluation. Together, MDH and the Taskforce advance a comprehensive public health approach to suicide prevention by strengthening partnerships, building community capacity, supporting data-informed decision-making, and coordinating statewide prevention efforts.
Minnesota law (§ 145.56, subd. 1) directs MDH, in collaboration with others, to implement the State Suicide Prevention Plan. Minnesota law (§ 145.56, subd. 2–5) further directs the commissioner of health to establish a grant program for community-based suicide prevention efforts; support employee assistance and workplace programs; provide training and technical assistance to professionals; collect and report suicide data annually; and evaluate the outcomes of the State Suicide Prevention Plan.
